‘The gathering’ is held to celebrate Indigenous Women's Empowerment Day. It was held on March 20th, 2006, and March 21, 2007 - the First Days of Spring. The Spring Equinox is symbolic of change, rebirth, renewal - hope for the future. This year it will be held on March 2oth, 2008, between 1-5 pm at The Ironworks, 235 Alexander Street, Vancouver. The goals of ‘the gathering’ are to:
Raise public consciousness surrounding the loss of humanity the families of the missing/murdered women are enduring.
This is an important opportunity to address and overcome cultural misunderstanding surrounding the Missing/Murdered Aboriginal Women of Canada.
The passing of family members indicates a transformation. A “celebration of Life”, focusing on these women, can provide recognition of society’s loss we have endured.
The spring equinox is a symbolic time in which we can, as recognition of this loss of humanity, celebrate these lives.
‘The gathering’ logo, "EAGLE AWAKENING" was created by Bruce Cook, a Haida artist living in Seattle, Washington, who donated the original work of art. Amie Stafford created this beautiful computer rendition with his approval. The eagle represents Indigenous Women. The egg represents Rebirth and Transformation
